Anzac for Everyone
Saturday, January 01, 2000
I attended the dawn service and Anzac day parade. I felt the whole exercise was healing for those who had lived through the wars and had lost mates or loved ones.
At the end though, I felt sad for the many German Australians, who had to remember their war and their dead in silence. German veterans should be allowed to march too.
Later I realised that we would have to accept Turkish and Japanese veterans as well. Radical, but what a positive idea!
The Governor's speech made much mention of "world peace", as it should. But before that can happen, we must embrace all nations - especially on a day of remembrance for the fallen.
