Misinformed

       Sunday, July 18, 2004

The letter The Age published from Dr Korb on Saturday, protesting that public school funding has been "bled" to other schools, only goes to show that even educated people are taken in by the deceitful campaign of the Australian Education Union to have people believe that state schools receive less taxpayers' money than other schools.

No other school place receives anywhere near as much government funding as a state-school place. This despite the fact that many state-school users are rich and many others are poor. The funding system is not needs-based.

Envy-motivated journalists love to harp on the few posh schools, that do spend a lot more on their students (but in fact receive only a small fraction of normal funding). What Dr Korb doesn't seem to know is that most non-state schools actually operate on smaller budgets - grants, fees and all - than state schools!
