Where Did the Future Go?
Saturday, January 01, 2000
With mechanisation and computerisation, we were told we'd have more time for relaxation, family life, culture, education - we'd be enjoying a more balanced life.
But we've been had. We are working harder now than before. Thousands have to hire childcarers for long periods. Many couples don't have time for a decent conversation.
And as if this weren't bad enough, we simultaneously have hordes of unhappy, unemployed youth. Young people more than anyone need to be engaged in purposeful role in society. A rat race combined with youth unemployment - economically a farcical state of affairs, painfully obvious to all for many years.
But where are the solutions? Where is the leadership? We seem to have thousands of experts, but no answers.
