Right to Coffee

Herald Sun        Wednesday, April 23, 2003

A state government of a modern democracy has no business dictating to its people on which days we can go to our coffee bars.

Hudsons Coffee was naturally peeved when Starbucks opened on a “banned” day. But it’s a shame they dobbed Starbucks in, thus adding an air of respectability to the bureaucratic bullying.

A better idea would be for all coffee bars to open on a “banned” day, and for we patrons to attend them in extra large numbers on that day.

Then if the state power-freaks persist with their abuse of power, all the coffee bars could chip in together to get one good lawyer to defend the rights of us all. Patrons could be invited to donate a dollar to this issue.

How basic: the right to buy or sell a cup of coffee on a given day!
