Clergy Converted

       Saturday, January 01, 2000

First the Anglicans and now the Uniting Church Synod are earnestly spouting Labor party propaganda on the school system.  How ironic.  Religious missionaries used to convert natives.  Now political missionaries convert clergy!

The Unitings warn that a two-tier system of schools could result from the government plan to let some state schools become more autonomous, hiring their own staff, etc.  They obviously believe the new schools will provide a better service.

But it amazes me that they haven't noticed we already have a two-tier system, the private and the state schools.  Did they want to keep all state students equally disadvantaged, so that private schools can continue to dominate the executive class?

Or were they going to urge the compulsory closure of private schools so that all our children can be equally poorly serviced?

If some state schools adopt a management plan that improves their service, the plan will inevitably spread.  Who could possibly wish to block this evolution of improved opportunity for children?

The only people I can think of are the unions and bureaucracy who feed off the tightly centralised state school industry.
