Protecting the Empire

The Age        Friday, June 22, 2001

We accept the challenge of Anthony Marriott (Letters 20/6/01).  He says independent schools don’t deserve the same funding because we are not accessible to all. But for most of us, it’s the other way round.  We are not accessible to all because we don’t get the same funding!

Hear this: we agree to accept children “irrespective of wealth or creed” if we are granted the same dollars for each child as the state system. To say yes is to extend the dignity of choice to more Australian parents, and to create healthy competition - causing the quality of all schooling to advance.

To say no is merely to protect the empire of the existing monopoly holders.
