Vexatious Revenue Raising
Thursday, March 28, 2002
The State government’s increased harvest in speeding fines, made possible by reducing the “error” margin to only 3kph, will not only cause resentment, but also driver stress and road accidents.
Car speed fluctuates constantly with road contours, and already drivers are having to peek at their speed dial too frequently. The road to Geelong is a real headache, with its constantly changing signs.
If they really believe speed has to be reduced still further, let them come clean and change their 80 signs to 70, but leave the 10% margin alone. Only greed would prefer to reduce the tolerances and make driving a dangerous and stressful ordeal.
