GG Precedent
Herald Sun Friday, May 16, 2003
The inevitable eventual change from a vice-regal governor-general to a republican president will almost certainly be a legal technicality that will not impact on the lives of the vast majority of Australians.
However if Hollingworth is hounded from office by character assassins, a serious change will occur to Australian politics. No Head of State will ever please everyone. But the precedent will be established that parties feeling left out will try to bring down the president or governor.
I am appalled to see people in powerful positions play fast and loose with our precious asset in a troubled world, our stable democracy.
